The recent discovery of superconductivity in pressurized bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O7 has triggered tremendous research interest. Although experimental studies have indicated that oxygen vacancies always exist, the influence of oxygen deficiency on electronic structures and superconductivity remains unexplained. This study reveals that oxygen deficiency stems from the lack of interlayer apical oxygen atoms and these oxygen vacancies are more destructive for the metallization of the Ni3dz2orbitals, thus being more detrimental to the superconductivity of La3Ni2O7–δ. The cover constructs a crystal structure of La3Ni2O7–δ with some interlayer apical oxygen vacancies, and the presence of these oxygen vacancies is harmful to electron pairing and suppresses the emergence of superconductivity (see the article (No. 247411) by Yu Chen et al.).
